The cycleway at Wairoa Bridge will remain closed while repair options and remedial designs are investigated for a damaged portion of the cycleway and embankment.

Tauranga City Council is aware of concerns in the cycling community regarding the safety of the Wairoa Bridge and the current cycleway closure. With the cycleway closed due to slip repair work, there are limited alternative options for cyclists to cross the Wairoa Bridge safely.
While cyclists may wish to use the bridge, it is not recommended due to the constrained corridor, high traffic volumes, and current speed environment, which make conditions unsafe for riding.
Cyclists wanting to access the Ōmokoroa cycleway from Tauranga are encouraged to park at the Wairoa River Reserve carpark and begin the cycleway to Ōmokoroa via Wairoa River Road and Te Puna Station Road.
Council is liaising with NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi on repairs to the damaged route, and reminds cyclists this closure is temporary.

The cycleway at Wairoa Bridge will remain closed while repair options and remedial designs are investigated for a damaged portion of the cycleway and embankment.
The embankment that supports the cycleway on the south side of the Wairoa Bridge, SH2, was damaged and closed on 27 March after a significant amount of rainfall across January and February resulted in waterlogged soil and slips across Tauranga.
NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi recently completed geotechnical assessments at site and confirmed funding approval to implement a long-term remedial solution of the slip area and damaged cycleway. Next steps include review of the data, remediation option selection, final design, and construction. An expected construction completion and reopening date will be provided once confirmed.
