Cameron Road
January will be a busy month for roadworks, with simultaneous lane closures on Takitimu Drive and Cameron Road.
The Cameron Road Joint Venture has returned to work and have started a new section of works between First and Third Avenues, which sees lane closures on both the northbound and southbound lanes. During this period, northbound traffic will be diverted onto the other side of the road, with a single lane operating in each direction. There will also be lane closures on First, Second and Third Avenues.
Work continues on the eastern side of Cameron Road between Sixth and Ninth Avenue, and Twelfth and Fourteenth Avenue. Vehicle traffic will be reduced to one lane on the eastern side in the areas where work is taking place. If you’re coming into the city in January, make sure you check the current road closures on the Tauranga City Council website, so you can navigate easily through the city centre.
Repairs to SH2 Takitimu Drive (under the Waihi Road/Eleventh Avenue overbridge) by Waka Kotahi
People who travel along State Highway 2 Takitimu Drive regularly will know there are a few bumps under the Waihi Road/Eleventh Avenue overbridge, near Judea. Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are currently rebuilding this section. The works involve removing a considerable amount of the road and filling it with new material and replacing with structural asphalt, as well as upgrading the drainage.
To do the rebuild work, they need to close the 500-metre section down to two lanes. This will add time to people's journeys. The alternative routes will both have significant worksites active from 10 January; a weekend closure of SH2 at Bay Link from approximately 1.00am Saturday 15 January to 5.30am Monday 17 January, as well as the worksites along Cameron Road.
Waka Kotahi expects this work to be completed by 28 January 2022, weather permitting.

Mount Festival of Multisport
Saturday 22 January
Record numbers of athletes are expected to take part in the iconic Mount Festival of Multisport on Saturday 22 January.
Several road closures at Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa will be in place, so please ensure you plan ahead or consider using alternative routes where possible. The following road closures are put in place to support safe event operations.
From 6am Friday 21 January to 9pm Saturday 22 January:
- Salisbury Wharf Car Park - the entire car parking area
- Salisbury Avenue - from Victoria Road to The Mall
- The Mall - from Salisbury Avenue to Prince Avenue
From 4.30am to 5pm on Saturday 22 January:
- The Mall - from Prince Avenue to Adams Avenue including the Pilot Bay Boat Ramp
- Adams Avenue - from The Mall to Marine Parade
- Marine Parade - from Adams Avenue to Oceanbeach Road
From 4.30am to 1pm on Saturday 22 January:
- Oceanbeach Road - from Marine Parade to road end
- Yale Street - from Oceanbeach Road to Maranui Street
- Maranui Street - from Yale Street to Sandhurst Drive
- Pāpāmoa Beach Road - from Sandhurst Drive to Grant Place.
From 6am to 1pm on Saturday 22 January:
- State Highway 2 – east bound from the intersection with Domain Road, including the Domain Road east bound on ramp, to the intersection with State Highway 33.
If you live in Pāpāmoa, please avoid using the Parton and Tara Road roundabout area where possible between 7.45 am and 11.45 am to minimise delays and increase safety for participants as they link up with the Tauranga Eastern Link leg of the event.
We recommend that you plan ahead and use alternative routes where possible. If you need to travel through these areas, please drive carefully and expect delays of up to 30 minutes during peak event times. For more information, please visit the event website.
Elizabeth Street upgrade
We’re upgrading the streetscape in the area surrounding the Thirty Eight Elizabeth development (Farmers). Works on First Avenue and Devonport Road are due to be complete in early-2022. Works on Elizabeth Street, including creating a linear park outside Thirty Eight Elizabeth, and to upgrade Mareanui laneway (adjacent to the Elizabeth Street car parking building) are being completed in stages as areas are made available.
- Elizabeth Street west bound lane closure: there is an extended lane closure on the west bound traffic lane (heading towards Takitimu Drive between Devonport Road and Grey Street roundabout) until approximately May 2022. The traffic lane closure is to enable streetscape works and Farmers construction to occur simultaneously. Businesses, footpaths and accessways are accessible during the works. On-street carparking is unavailable.
Totara Street safety upgrade
We’re working on a safer option for people who travel along Totara Street.
Work continues between Hewletts Road and Triton Avenue. Between 7pm and 7am traffic traveling south along Totara Street will be diverted along Maunganui Road between 7pm and 7am, Sunday to Thursday, until this section of work is complete (pictured below). Both lanes of traffic will remain open along Totara Street during the day.
Night work north of Kawaka Street (towards Rata Street) started this week. Two way traffic will be maintained throughout.

Traffic report
City centre
- 2 Devonport Road: please take care when walking past the demolition site in this area. There will be footpath detours and some car park closures over the next few months.
Beyond the city centre
- Cameron Road, Greerton (by Green Park School): New pedestrian signalised crossing under construction, civils works were completed prior to Christmas. Work to install and commission the signals is expected to be completed before schools return. Please adhere to temporary speed limit when driving through works.
