Environmental volunteering

Tauranga City is lucky enough to be home to some beautiful coastal and wetland reserve areas.

Council would like your help in looking after these areas of natural beauty through a volunteer-led program of maintenance and planting, in addition to the work our City Operations team does to maintain our much-loved spaces and places.

If you want to get involved, please contact our Community and Customer Coordinator, Angus Gough at angus.gough@tauranga.govt.nz

What does volunteering involve?

It involves donating your time, skills, knowledge and enthusiasm to a project designed for the greater good of the community.

You may choose to volunteer for several reasons, including:

  • To make new friends
  • To contribute to a good cause
  • To give back to your community
  • To improve the environment
  • To learn new skills
  • To have fun.

We’re grateful for the fantastic work our volunteers are doing in the Tauranga City Council area and we’d welcome you to join in too!

If there isn’t already a group established near you, get in touch with us!

We can help local communities set up a range of volunteering projects, such as native vegetation planting, maintenance and monitoring, restoration and/or monitoring of wetlands, dunes or other natural environments, and more.

We can help with technical advice, materials and other resources, and project coordination.

Education providers

Our team can provide in class and field trip learning sessions for your school.

Keen to come to the beach and learn about how sand dunes are the perfect natural defence for our coastline, or do some weeding/planting and then return to school with a set of resources for further learning? Get in touch with us!

We’re also happy to help your students learn about wetland reserve management and how to improve biodiversity. Contact Angus Gough for more information.

For workplaces

Want to give back a little to the city you work in? Organise a volunteering session with our coordinator and get your staff outside, helping to make Tauranga look a little more beautiful.

Our corporate volunteer sessions have previously covered:

  • Weeding around newly planted native trees in Gordon Carmichael reserve.
  • Weeding out an area of the sand dunes to prepare for new native planting.
  • Planting native trees/vegetation in reserves around Tauranga.
  • Picking up rubbish in one of our reserves.

If you want to get involved looking after the native flora and fauna of our city, then please contact our Community and Customer Coordinator, Angus Gough
