Direct debit

The easiest way to pay your rates on time is by direct debit.

Direct Debits can be set up or changed at any time throughout the year. Council rates are paid in two instalments each year: the rates instalments are due on last working day of August and the last working day of February.

New system to manage your rates information and payments:

From 1 July, the IT system we use to manage land rates is changing.

Changes include new customer numbers, new payment reference numbers and changes to direct debit payments.

Direct Debit options

Weekly, fortnightly, and monthly direct debits allow you to build credit towards paying your rates on the instalment due dates.

Weekly: Deducted on your selected day (Tuesday or Thursday).

Fortnightly: Deducted on your selected day (Tuesday or Thursday).

Monthly: Deducted on the 20th of each month.

  • Please note: If you set up a weekly, fortnightly, or monthly direct debit in August, your first payment will be scheduled for September. If you have an existing balance due by 31 August your initial payments will go toward clearing that balance while also building a credit towards your future rates invoices. This may result in a higher payment than expected but going forward your payments will return to the regular amount once the balance is cleared.

Instalment Due Date: The amount due on your rates instalment invoice will be deducted from your bank account on the instalment due date (last working day of February and last working day of August).

Annual: The total annual rates (01 Jul - 30 Jun) amount due on your rates instalment invoice will be deducted on the due date (last working day of August).

  • Please note: If this option is selected after the first instalment, the 'total now due' amount will be deducted.

Direct debits give the Council the authority to make deductions from your bank account automatically on the scheduled days. When your new rates payment is calculated each year, after the council sets the new budget each July, the amount debited will be updated, and you’ll be notified of any changes to your direct debit schedule in advance on your next rates instalment invoice.

Amending a direct debit

If you need to edit the details of an existing direct debit, for example if you want to change the bank account it’s linked to, simply set up a new direct debit and it will supersede the existing one.
