Hazardous Waste has the potential to harm people's health and the environment. It includes substances that are flammable, corrosive, chemically reactive, toxic, eco-toxic or radioactive.
Council's hazardous substances officers are responsible for ensuring all residential premises, using and storing hazardous substances, comply with the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act and Regulations. We can also help with non-workplace concerns like residential homes and parks and reserves.
Hazardous waste disposal
Council will accept small quantities of selected hazardous waste from households for free at Te Maunga transfer station. These include e-waste, fluorescent tubes, batteries, solvents, household cleaners, garden chemicals.

Hazardous waste from commercial businesses
Council does not accept hazardous waste from businesses.
Worksafe Tauranga is responsible for all workplaces using, storing and manufacturing hazardous substances and monitor and enforce the Health and Safety at Work (Hazardous Substances) Regulations.
Worksafe New Zealand supervise and oversee the correct and safe storage and use of hazardous substances in workplaces.

Recycling for hazardous agricultural waste
The Agrecovery Rural Recycling Programme provides New Zealand’s primary sector with responsible and sustainable systems for the recovery and recycling of persistent “on-farm” waste products.
