Information about the Māori ward

In 2025 a by-election is being held and voters on the Māori electoral roll can choose a candidate to represent the Te Awanui Māori ward.

The Future of Māori Wards

The Council will be required to decide on the future of the Māori Ward in Tauranga by 30 November 2026. Other councils have been required to do this ahead of their elections in 2025. If the council votes to retain the Māori ward, a referendum must take place by 28 March 2027.

If the Council decides to disestablish the Māori ward in November 2026 that is the end of the process and there is no poll held. If Council chooses to hold a poll, the results of the poll will inform the representation review that will be held in 2027.
