In June 2026 Council voted to retain the Māori Ward in Tauranga. Under current legislation, this decision triggers a binding poll, which must be held by 28 March 2027. Most other councils held their binding polls as part of the 2025 local elections.

The timing of Tauranga’s poll will be confirmed later in 2026, and voting will take place in 2027.
The poll results will inform the representation review planned for 2027, or any future representation arrangements developed through council’s participation in the Government’s ‘Simplifying Local Government’ work programme.
