CCO Aspiring Directors - Board Intern Programme

The CCO Aspiring Directors programme aims to both increase the number of people with governance experience and also, the diversity and depth of the governance talent pool available to Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty organisations.

In 2022, Tauranga City Council launched its inaugural Aspiring Directors Programme for three of its substantive CCOs: Bay Venues, Tourism Bay of Plenty and the Tauranga Art Gallery Trust.

As a board intern, this role is that of an unpaid volunteer for a period of 12 months.

The key benefits of the internship programme include:

  • Providing aspiring board members an opportunity to start their governance careers in a supportive environment that accelerates their boardroom experience.
  • Enabling aspiring board members to contribute to the community by bringing their ideas to the boardrooms.
  • Being assigned a mentor who will provide support and advice throughout the course of the internship programme.
  • Helping Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty region’s corporate community by developing a more diverse pool of potential company directors.

To qualify for the internship programme, aspiring directors need to:

  • Be at a stage in their career where they are looking to develop governance skills and gain board member roles in the next two to three years.
  • Be living in the Tauranga area.
  • Commit sufficient time to undertake the programme effectively (approximately 12 hours per month).
  • Have great relationship building and communication skills.
  • Have confidence to participate and contribute in a valuable way during interactions with CCO board members and at CCO board meetings.
