City centre rising campaign

Tauranga city centre is transforming into a great place for everyone.

A cultural and economic hub for the region

A growing number of people will be living in and around our city centre so we want to create a destination that our community has told us they want – one that’s vibrant, well-planned and safe, a city centre that is accessible and diverse, enhances our natural environment, and has more activities for everyone to enjoy. Together with our city partners, we’re on our way to making this a reality, with significant investment and public and private sector projects already committed over the next 10 years, as outlined in Priority One’s CBD Blueprint.

Transforming our city centre

Our City Centre Action and Investment Plan is the vision for this transformation. It outlines an overarching plan for the city centre, the investment required, and the programmes of work required to bring it to life.

Bringing the vision to life

We have a range of projects already underway and set to commence over the coming months and years that will see our city centre transformed into a great place to live, work, learn and play, with people at its heart: Te Rapunga Ora ki Te Papa.

We’re committed to revitalising our city centre so it once again becomes the thriving, beating heart of our city that our community wants and deserves.

Some of these exciting projects are outlined below.

City Centre projects

We have a number of exciting projects and plans happening right across our city centre that, together, are helping to transform it into a place that we can all be proud of.

Tauranga Moana Manu Champs returns as a gateway to the world title

The ultimate summer showdown is back, with the Tauranga Moana Manu Champs set to make a splash at the city’s waterfront on Saturday 13 December.

Now in its third year, the event has cemented its place as a highlight of our city’s summer calendar and has been named an official qualifying event for the Z Manu World Champs for the second consecutive year.

Winners in both the Manu and Freestyle jumping divisions will secure their place in the 2026 grand finale, to be held in Tāmaki Makaurau on 14 March 2026, going Manu for Manu with top talent from across Aotearoa for the ultimate title of “Manu World Champion”.

“The Tauranga Moana Manu Champs continues to be a celebration of our local talent, culture, and competitive spirit,” says Te Papa Ward Councillor Rod Taylor.

“It’s more than a summer event, it’s a chance for our community to come together, showcase their skills, make the most of our upgraded waterfront.”

Scott Rice, Owner and Event Director of Z Manu World Champs, says there is nothing quite like popping a Manu into the harbour with the crowd cheering you on.

“We’re stoked to have the Tauranga Moana Manu Champs as an official qualifier for the Z Manu World Champs for the second-year running. It’s one of only two qualifying locations where competitors can launch a Manu into the harbour, bringing an energy and atmosphere you just can’t replicate. We’re back to go even bigger this year. Grab your mates, bring the whānau and get ready to make a splash. The next Manu World Champ could be you!”

Organised by Tauranga City Council in partnership with Z Manu World Champs, the event will also feature a range of interactive experiences and competitions, including the crowd-favourite Push Play community jump session, where everyone is encouraged to have a go, step up and send it.

Whether you're jumping, cheering or just soaking up the atmosphere, come through, bring your crew, and make a day of it.

Where: Public wharf, Tauranga Southern Waterfront
When: Saturday, 13 December 2025, 11.30am - 4.45pm
