In Tauranga, we have a network of play spaces with additional fencing for children and young people who need clear boundaries to play confidently.
Fenced play spaces are located across the city to provide a nearby option for most residents. These locations may include fencing around the edge of the reserve or fencing around the playground and a grassed area within a reserve.

Please note that all of these fenced play spaces include some private boundary fencing. Due to this, Council cannot guarantee a fully secure fenced environment. In addition, where gates and latches are provided, Council cannot guarantee that gates will always remain closed, latched, or used correctly by all park users. We encourage parents and carers to remain vigilant in their supervision of children and young people while using playgrounds with additional fencing. Council is considering specific rules on dog access in these areas through the current review of the Dog Management Bylaw.
In 2026, four reserves and playgrounds (Berescourt Reserve, Keam Reserve, Rowesdale Drive Reserve,and Waterford Downs Reserve) were fenced to expand the options for families across the city. Reserve selection considered several elements, including geographical location, existing boundary fencing, pedestrian and maintenance access, current reserve layout, amenities such as shade and seating, sensory experience, and play value.
Communication boards
Communication boards are an inclusive tool that use symbols and words to support people who communicate differently or have limited verbal communication. We have "Playground Chat” communication boards installed in most of our fenced play spaces, helping park users connect, communicate, and participate more fully in outdoor play. Lees Park (Ōtūmoetai) does not currently have a communication board installed.
