Tsunami

An earthquake is the first warning that a tsunami might be on the way. Do not wait for official warnings to evacuate.

Tsunami safe location

Due to the Mauao landslide event on Thursday, 22 January, Mauao is closed to the public until further notice. In the event of a tsunami, the tsunami safe locations for Mount Maunganui are at Mount Drury and at Blake Park, between Maunganui Road and Totara Street.

Updated tsunami evacuation maps now available

Updated tsunami evacuation zone maps have been released by Bay of Plenty Civil Defence.

The modelling used in the updated maps was undertaken by GNS (Earth Sciences New Zealand) with peer reviewing by NIWA (National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research). The modelling is based on the most up to date understanding of tsunami generation using a model that has been internationally validated on past tsunami events.

Now is a good time to check any changes in your suburb, and to practice your household’s evacuation plan and route to reach your nearest tsunami safe area.

Tauranga City Council Emergency Management staff will be out in the community over the coming months, including at the Tauranga Home Show on 1-3 May, to educate residents about tsunami and updated maps.
