Tsunami

An earthquake is the first warning that a tsunami might be on the way. Do not wait for official warnings to evacuate.

Update on tsunami inundation data

We have recently received updated tsunami inundation modelling from Bay of Plenty Regional Council which has been applied to property files of affected properties. A tsunami inundation area is the area that could be covered by water if a tsunami hits. Property owners now included in, or removed from, the tsunami inundation area will receive letters from late October. You can view the inundation areas on Bay of Plenty Regional Council’s Bay Explorer online map at https://maps.boprc.govt.nz/pages/bayexplorer (Click on the RHS 'Open BayExplorer' Tab, select Natural Hazards and then Tsunami Inundation).

Tsunami evacuation maps found on our webpage and on signs around Tauranga will be updated in early 2026 based on the updated tsunami inundation data.
