Building consents

A building consent ensures that the proposed work is safe, durable and doesn’t endanger the health and safety of anyone using the building.

  • Find out if you need a building consent
    Certain projects will require a building consent. Find out if you need one.
  • Apply for a new building consent
    Building consent applications can be submitted online.
  • Building inspections
    When your building consent is issued you will receive a list of inspections required. These are carried out over the course of the work and at the end.
  • Code compliance certificate
    The certificate confirms the work done complies with the building consent.
  • What will a building consent cost?
    Costs will vary depending on the type of project. View the fees here.
  • Building forms, guidance and reports
    Forms, guidance and reports related to your project and what you may need to supply Council.
  • Making processing consents easier
    If we can find the information easily, it can reduce requests for information.
  • Project Information Memorandum
    A PIM is a report issued by the Council before, or with a building consent.
  • Owner-builder exemptions
    A suitably-skilled owner-builder can build their own home or do restricted building work on their own home, if they get a Council exemption.
  • Lapsed consents
    Owners should commence building work within 12 months of a building consent being issued.
  • Certificate of acceptance
    In some cases, a Certificate of Acceptance may be issued for building work that was carried out urgently or completed without a building consent.
  • Service Connection Application
    A service connection application or SCA, must be completed and an approval issued for all connections to Council owned infrastructure.
  • Restricted building work
    Restricted building can only be done or supervised by Licensed Building Practitioners.
