Find out more and donate

Since 2018, we have made significant inroads into delivering quality outcomes that our community, partners and the private sector have repeatedly told us they want, and the next 10 years (2024-2034) will be transformational for both our city centre and across our wonderful city.

Tauranga Moana has seen recent developments such as:

  • a new skatepark at Mount Maunganui and Papamoa
  • a coastal pathway along the Marine Parade
  • new wayfinding signage and cultural touchpoints around Mauao
  • tidal steps at Tauranga’s waterfront
  • new University of Waikato campus
  • opening of the Kulim, Pacific and Ila parks
  • improvements to all parks and reserves in Welcome Bay
  • restoration of Kōpurereua Valley and the realignment of the Kōpurererua Valley River
  • upgrading of Wharf and Durham Streets
  • upgrading of Tunks Reserve and Elizabeth Street East
  • completion of the new cycleway linking Ōmokoroa to Tauranga; and
  • alongside significant private development of new apartments, student accommodation and retail premises.
  • a new waterfront boardwalk and rail underpass
  • Masonic park upgrade
  • the Northern Waterfront Reserve

We have further great plans for places, spaces, and activities throughout our city. These plans will ensure Tauranga Moana continues to be an awesome place for current and future generations to live, learn, work and play.

We know we can’t do it alone – so at the core of delivering this transformation, is the partnerships between Tauranga City Council and mana whenua, central government, local and community grant funders, community groups, corporates, individual donors, residents, businesses, landowners, and developers.

We need your support

These plans come with a price tag, which is usually picked up by our ratepayers. We understand that our ratepayers alone cannot carry this burden.

Our focus is on building strong, long-term partnerships and thinking laterally about how we can continue to deliver outstanding places, spaces and activities for the whole community without having to solely rely on our ratepayers.

Get involved in shaping the future of our city

Tauranga City Council and mana whenua of Tauranga Moana have partnered to bring the long-held vision of Tauranga's civic precinct in the city centre to life. This transformative development will help to reinvigorate our city centre and make it the cultural, historic, economic and social centrepiece of New Zealand's fastest growing city, and the wider region.

Te Manawataki o Te Papa is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to reinvigorate Tauranga and create a space where people can connect, as they did generations ago.

We're now well on our way to achieving that vision and your support towards a new museum and library is vital to the future success of Te Manawataki o Te Papa.

We look forward to having you join this exciting journey with us. Together, we can revitalise the heart of our city centre.

If you wish to donate, the Te Manawataki o Te Papa Fund has been set up for this purpose.

Te Manawataki o Te Papa Fund

We have partnered with Acorn Foundation who will manage this fund on behalf of Council.

Acorn Foundation is a well-established, highly respected community foundation and is independent of Council. It celebrated its 20th birthday in 2023 and has distributed more than $16.5 million to the Western Bay of Plenty community and beyond, supporting the work of more than 260 local charities.

All donations will be managed by Acorn Foundation. The Foundation’s role is both to support donors' aspirations for the city, providing opportunities for giving back, and to provide the back office expertise to manage the fund.

All donations will remain 100% confidential, with donations going directly to Acorn Foundation to be distributed to the Te Manawataki o Te Papa project. Council will only be advised of the cumulative monthly totals raised.
