Masterplans: Baypark, Blake Park and Tauranga Domains

We’re looking across our three key sport and recreation facilities, Baypark, Blake Park and Tauranga Domains and planning for the future.

Tauranga’s Blake Park, Baypark and Tauranga Domain are what are called ‘major multi-use active reserves’ – they are basically our biggest and most used shared spaces.

High level masterplans for each of the reserves have been developed to create a city-wide network for sports and recreation that could see them become world-class facilities over time.

Master planning for all three major sites at the same time allows for a coordinated and integrated approach to optimising the space we have, and as part of Tauranga’s large network of active reserve spaces.

We’re viewing the three as a network, so we can see who fits best where and make the most of all three sites.

A collaborative approach

We’re partnering with Sport Bay of Plenty, Bay Venues Limited and Priority One on the ambitious project and will continue to work closely with mana whenua, as well as community and sporting groups, to bring the plans to life.

From aspiring athletes to basketball development squads, Saturday morning netball teams to festival goers – there’s going to be more space for everyone and we’re committed to continuing ongoing discussions with all the organisations currently using the reserves.

What’s changing

As part of the overall plan, it’s proposed that some sports and activities will move to different parts of the city, including:

  • Relocation of the Mount Playcentre and demolition of the current building (underway)
  • Extension of the Bay Oval Pavilion (underway)
  • Relocation of the Baypark Speedway pit area
  • Development of new outdoor netball courts at Baypark and temporary supporting facilities
  • Development of an athletics track at Baypark and temporary supporting facilities
  • Enabling work for additional grass fields at Blake Park.
