Every year we honour the soldiers who fought at Gallipoli and remember those involved in other conflicts in which New Zealand has been involved.
Anzac Day 2020 commemorations
With Anzac Day 2020 services cancelled around the country, Tauranga City Council is supporting the RSA’s call to #StandAtDawn and other activities, to honour the sacrifice of our brave servicemen and women.

Anzac Day #StandatDawn and Dawn Service broadcast
#StandatDawn, an RSA initiative, invites people nationwide to stand on Saturday 25 April at 6am, at your letterbox, your front door, in your lounge, balconies, or on the driveway. (Observing the ‘bubble’ guidelines in place).
People can then tune into Radio NZ National (AM & FM frequencies) for the official dawn service broadcast at 6am (or listen live on the internet or using the app).
Details of the RSA initiative, #StandAtDawn and information about the morning service.
Apart, but together as one.
The RSA are also encouraging everyone to get involved to commemorate this Anzac Day at home by:
- Decorating your letterbox or front window with poppies
- Creating a poppy wreath
- Making some Anzac biscuits
- Sharing your photos or videos by tagging #StandAtDawn #AnzacDay @RSANational and @NZDefenceForce on Facebook and Instagram.

A local perspective on Anzac Day
To bring our attention to what Anzac Day means to our rangatahi, we have put together a compilation of speeches from some of our local year 13 students leaders.
These speeches would normally be shared during Tauranga’s Anzac Day Services.
In line with tradition, here is the Mayor Tenby Powell’s Anzac Day address.
Donations to the RSA
As its annual poppy appeal has been postponed, the RSA is offering New Zealanders the opportunity to download a Facebook profile frame in return for a donation with GiveALittle.
Auckland War Memorial Museum has an online cenotaph. To discover more about New Zealand’s history and involvement in WWI and WWII and lay a digital poppy in remembrance of a loved one.
Tauranga libraries and Tauranga Heritage Collection photos
To offer a perspective on past Anzac Day commemorations, we have made some local Anzac Day history available, courtesy of the Tauranga Libraries and the Tauranga Heritage Collection.
This slideshow features the personal details and photographs (where possible) of the men from Tauranga who were killed in the First World War. This slideshow was created for an exhibition and shared during the 100 year commemorative Anzac Day service in 2015.
