Most wastewater blockages (and subsequent overflows) occur when people flush things down their toilets or sinks that they shouldn’t like wet wipes, fats and cooking oils. Wastewater overflows can also occur when stormwater enters the wrong pipes during heavy rain due to faulty gully traps or damaged infrastructure.
If a wastewater overflow has occurred, please notify us.

A wastewater overflow has occurred at El Questro Drive Papamoa on 2 November 2026. The overflow was a result of a cross connection. This will have impacted Wairakei Stormwater Reserve.
Council staff and contractors have identified the problem and will be fixing the wastewater connection as soon as practicable and will be putting up warning signs at nearby public access points. Water quality sampling will be undertaken as soon as weather permits.
