Safety improvements are set to begin at the Girven Road pedestrian crossing between Hawea Street and Grenada Street, making it safer and easier for people to travel through the area.
The upgrade will convert the existing crossing to a signalised crossing, widen a section of the path on the Bayfair side to create a short, shared path, and add cycle on/off ramps to improve connections for cyclists.
These improvements respond to safety concerns at the current crossing, where limited visibility and unpredictable vehicle movements can create risks for pedestrians and cyclists. The signalised crossing will give pedestrians and cyclists dedicated crossing times and provide clear, controlled stopping points for vehicles.
Construction is scheduled to begin on Monday, 27 July 2026, and is expected to take approximately six weeks to complete, weather permitting. Works will take place Monday to Saturday, between 9am and 3pm, outside peak traffic periods.
Temporary traffic management will be in place throughout the works to protect road users, pedestrians and work crews while maintaining safe and efficient traffic flow. This may include partial footpath closures, temporary one-way traffic detours, and stop/go traffic management. Detours will only be in place when required, with two-way traffic flow maintained for most of the construction period.
