Do you have a passion for the visual arts and creative sector?

If so, a board member role at Tauranga Art Gallery Trust may be your perfect opportunity.

Tauranga Art Gallery Trust owns and operates the Tauranga Art Gallery – toi Tauranga, on behalf of the residents of Tauranga and the Western Bay of Plenty.

The Gallery’s purpose is to create exceptional art experiences that engage, inspire, challenge and educate through exhibitions, public programmes, and events.

The Board of Trustees are responsible for developing and delivering the Gallery’s strategic goals, overseeing the management of the Gallery’s assets and resources, and for ensuring prudent financial management to ensure longterm sustainability.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a trustee to join the board from 1 July 2025, whose skills and experience complement those of the current board. Diversity of thinking is valued, and the current board will typically have the following attributes:

  • Governance experience with a strong strategic vision. Experienced in local government and understanding of public service ethos.
  • Visual arts experience locally and nationally – in the education, commercial and/or community sectors.
  • Well-connected to the local community arts sector, preferably acknowledged in the arts sector.
  • In-depth appreciation and understanding of the public art gallery environment and in advancing the appreciation of art and culture in our region.
  • Understanding of the cultural history of New Zealand and appreciation of Tauranga Moana Tangata Whenua.
  • Experienced in HR / employment matters or coaching / mentoring skills.
  • Experienced with health, safety and wellbeing of the organisation and the community.
  • Understanding of the political environment and how a CCO operates.
  • Fit and cohesion with existing Board.

If you believe you have the skills to make a difference and a real contribution to the Board of Tauranga Art Gallery Trust, your interest in the position is welcomed.

Tauranga Art Gallery Trust is a council-controlled organisation of Tauranga City Council, which operate autonomously but in a political environment, with a requirement to meet the expectations of both its shareholders and its community in accordance with an agreed Statement of Intent.

Meetings are held in Tauranga. A small remuneration is provided and will be confirmed prior to appointment. Successful applicants will be appointed for a three-year term. While applicants are not required to live in Tauranga, the ability to build and maintain relationships within the Bay of Plenty community needs to be demonstrated.
