Tauranga City Council is pleased to welcome applications for its Council-Controlled Organisation (CCO) Board Intern Programme.
The core aim of the programme is to both increase the number of people with governance experience and also the diversity and depth of the governance talent pool available to Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty organisations.
For the purpose of this internship, Council is looking for diversity in experience, skill, talent, thought, age, gender and ethnicity.
The opportunity
This is a fantastic opportunity for an aspiring director to become a board intern for one of the following CCOs:
- Bay Venues Limited – the kaitiaki of more than 20 community facilities in Tauranga Moana including Mercury Baypark and the University of Waikato Adams Centre for High Performance.
- Tauranga Art Gallery Trust – the kaitiaki who creates exceptional art experiences that engage, inspire, challenge and educate Tauranga residents and visitors.
What we offer
This is an unpaid voluntary role for 12 months and the key benefits of becoming a CCO board intern include the following:
- Providing aspiring board members an opportunity to start their governance careers in a supportive environment that accelerates their boardroom experience.
- Being assigned a mentor who will provide support and advice throughout the course of the internship programme.
- Enabling board interns to access Council-funded professional development opportunities.
- Enabling board interns to contribute to the community by bringing their ideas to the boardroom.
- Providing board interns with a better understanding of the Tauranga City Council group, its processes, public service ethos and the local government sector in general.
- Enabling board interns to develop relationships and networks with the CCO board chair and other board members.
- Helping Tauranga and the wider Bay of Plenty region’s corporate community by developing a more diverse pool of potential company directors.
The internship involves:
- Monthly attendance at CCO board meetings and quarterly attendance at a sub-committee meeting.
- Attendance at a Council meeting, presentations and networking events.
- Opportunities for networking, participating in board discussions and assisting specific work programmes (e.g. Audit and Risk sub-committee or Remuneration sub-committee).
- Opportunity for cross-board observation with another CCO to increase exposure to different governance styles and board dynamics.
- Invitation to Governance to Governance functions with Council’s Elected Members and other CCO board members.
- Professional development opportunities, including Cultural Connections Training and Institute of Directors or Governance New Zealand training.
About you
The board intern must demonstrate a strong commitment, motivation and desire to pursue directorship opportunities. In addition to your demonstrated desire to contribute to Tauranga’s future, you will contribute to diversity of thinking around the CCOs’ board tables.
Aspiring directors must have the following attributes:
- Being at a stage in their career where they are looking to develop governance skills and gain board member roles in the next two to three years.
- Having a range of skills and sector experience which includes community and public service.
- Having a breadth of knowledge of Tauranga’s diverse communities and stakeholders.
- Be living in the Tauranga area.
- Being able to commit enough time to undertake the programme effectively (approximately 12 hours per month), which includes preparing for and attending meetings, and proactively working with their board mentor.
- Having great relationship building and communication skills, with the confidence to participate and contribute in a valuable way during interactions with CCO board members and at CCO board meetings.
- Having experience developing strategies and measuring business performance against strategic targets.
- Having an employer’s letter approving participation in the 12-month board intern programme.

The board interns will be appointed for a 12-month term with their respective CCO board, starting December 2024.
This position will be subject to pre-appointment and background checks.
Once expressions of interest close on 31 October 2024 (10am), the Interview Panel will shortlist those candidates that meet the selection criteria and invite them to an interview.
Shortlisted candidates will need to provide two key documentations prior to the interviews taking place – an employer letter of approval and a signed non-disclosure and conflict of interest declaration form.
Interviews will be held in Tauranga on 19 November.
