City Operations

Tauranga City Council is responsible for keeping the natural areas and landscapes of our city well maintained and beautiful for our community. We’ve changed the way we do this by creating dedicated teams to look after Tauranga’s many walkways and cycleways, picnic areas, parks, reserves, and gardens.

City Operations team in action

Growing with the times

For the last few years most of Tauranga’s outdoor spaces have been looked after by maintenance contractors. Now we are gradually bringing some outdoor maintenance work in-house to be managed by our City Operations team.

The City Operations Team are responsible for the outdoor maintenance and restoration of:

  • Parks, reserves, public gardens, and dunes in Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa.
  • Walkways, accessways, natural vegetation areas, and structures (like seating and boardwalks) upkeep throughout Tauranga, Mount Maunganui and Pāpāmoa.

The team take care of mowing, weeding, maintenance of structures, pest spraying, gardening and more. Our purpose is to keep the parks, reserves, dunes, and walkways of Tauranga in great condition.

Bringing our green work in-house means we have greater oversight of the service we are providing and creates efficiencies so we can be more agile and responsive to community feedback and requests. Our crews act on issues and maintenance needs on the spot or report the problem so it can be attended to as soon as possible.

We are reviewing which contracts we bring in-house on a case-by-case basis as existing contracts near their expiry date.

Help and support

Our City Operations team are part of the community, just like you, and are happy to say hello. If they can’t help you on the spot, they can connect you with the rest of the team who are here to assist.

If you see an area in need of maintenance, then please contact us and report it. You can call us on 07 577 7000, or email info@tauranga.govt.nz. Our contact centre staff are available 24/7, even on public holidays.

FAQ’s

If our crews come across an issue or area that needs maintenance, they can act on the spot or report the problem so it can be attended to as soon as possible.

‘Prioritising nature’ is a key element of our city vision. We want everyone to be proud of their city and keeping our open spaces well-maintained and beautiful is big part of that.

Our City Operations team will also be focussing on creating shady areas by planting more trees, or as a short-term solution, installing shade structures.

Our new depot, vehicles and equipment required to support the in-housing of maintenance contracts has been budgeted for in our 2023/24 Annual plan.
