Closed Circuit Television (CCTV)

Tauranga City Council seeks to provide safe public places where members of the community feel secure and protected.

We have a network of “Closed Circuit Television cameras” (CCTV) capturing both sound and video in accordance with our CCTV Policy and in line with the requirements of the Privacy Act 2020.

CCTV is used in particular areas to enhance protection and improve safety, monitor passenger and traffic movements, secure council facilities such as libraries and recreation centres, support the delivery of council services and compliance with regulations, determine weather conditions, monitor public places in order to help reduce crime and anti-social behaviour, support training, quality control and authorised research, and to promote community health and safety.

CCTV footage will only be viewed by authorised council staff and representatives from public law enforcement agencies (e.g. NZ Police) in accordance with the purposes noted above, or when checking that the system is operational. No attempt will be made to identify individuals from CCTV footage except in cases of reported or suspected incidents requiring investigation, or in relation to any legal proceedings. All information will be stored securely and only kept as long as is necessary for the purpose it was lawfully obtained.

Signage indicates where CCTV equipment is operating, and below is a list of camera locations.
