Adopting a dog

Suitable dogs that have been abandoned or surrendered can be adopted.

Council staff temperament test each dog to ensure it is socialised with both people and other dogs before putting it up for adoption.

When adopting a dog it is important to match the dog to your family circumstances

  • Do you want an active dog or a quiet one?
  • What size dog do you want?

You also need to consider the environment that the dog will live in and your ability to exercise and care for the dog for the next 15 years.

Fee - as at 1 July, 2024

The adoption fee is $371 (male) and $424 (female). This includes registration, neutering and a microchip.

If you are looking for a particular type of dog, please phone us on 07 577 7000 and tell us what sort of dog you are looking for. We can add you to our watchlist, and if a dog becomes available that meets your requirements we will contact you.
