Age friendly city

Council is committed to creating a city where people can age positively, and where the older population are highly valued and recognised as an integral part of the community.

The vision is that Tauranga is an age-friendly city that enables people to live independently and participate fully in all aspects of community and city life as they age. A Positive Ageing Advisory Forum (PAAF) is in the process of being established. PAAF will undertake an advocacy and monitoring role in relation to the implementation of the Age-Friendly City Strategy, as Council works toward supporting Tauranga’s growing older population.

What is an age-friendly city?

An age-friendly city provides opportunities for older people to participate fully in city life (termed ‘active ageing’) and live independently for as long as possible in their own home and community (termed ‘ageing-in-place’).

Tauranga's Age-Friendly Strategy leads the way

The Tauranga Age-Friendly City Strategy was adopted by Council on 24 September 2013 – a first for Tauranga and New Zealand. The Strategy identifies the actions a number of agencies across the city plan to do to make Tauranga a vibrant and liveable age-friendly city, in which people can live, learn, work and play.

A key part of developing the strategy was engaging with older people in the community to seek their views. Seven community workshops were held throughout the city to gather views directly from the community on how Tauranga could become more age-friendly.
