Our awards and achievements

Our people work on many innovative projects that make a real difference to our community. Their work has been recognised through several awards and achievements.

Taituara award

LGFA Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards 2023

Tauranga City Council had three winners and one finalist in the Taituarā Local Government Excellence Awards in 2023.

The awards recognise programmes, projects, and approaches that demonstrate professional excellence in local government management.

We’re immensely proud of our people’s success in the Awards, acknowledging their valuable mahi and leadership skills. You can view Council’s awards and finalist project below.

2023 Taituarā Awards

Council won the award for its ‘Joint Land Ownership – the Right Thing to Do' project. This award recognises programmes, projects or initiatives that demonstrate outstanding results from working in partnership with Māori. 

We submitted our joint ownership solution with Otamataha Trust for the land beneath where our civic precinct, Te Manawataki o Te Papa, will be built. The judges said, "working together has resulted both in the resolution of a long-standing dispute outside of Te Tiriti processes and empowerment of a large transformative project with multiple wellbeing outcomes. A clear commitment to partnership was evident. This was indeed, the right thing to do.”

Council staff member Anne Blakeway, Manager: City Partnerships, was one of four winners selected for the 2023 Overseas Managers Exchange programme. This programme provides local government managers with an opportunity to focus on their management development and career through a short exchange with a partner manager in another country.

Tauranga City Council’s team, the Tauranga Moana Taskmasters, were crowned the winners of the New Zealand leg of the Australasian Management Challenge. The Challenge is Australasia’s premier forum for current and emerging local government leaders and is designed to enhance leadership and management skills of local government professionals through team-based learning and development.

The annual competition involves teams from local government organisations throughout the country. Entrants undertake a series of tasks throughout a ‘Challenge Day’ which are designed to simulate real council and community issues in a fast-paced environment, requiring a variety of leadership skills to be demonstrated. The team will now represent New Zealand at the Australian finals, competing against seven states and territories.

Health and safety award

New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards 2022

Tauranga City Council was selected as a finalist in the prestigious New Zealand Workplace Health and Safety Awards for 2022 in the Innovation category. The awards are organised by Thomson Reuters, publisher of Safeguard magazine, and supported by WorkSafe New Zealand and ACC.

The Tauranga City Council submission focused on an innovative solution to a risky issue at the Te Maunga wastewater plant. A jig was designed and manufactured to assist with the safe installation and removal of biosolid valves. This resulted in a win for the public; for our city’s ratepayers with lower costs to complete the task, for the contractors with the task being simplified, and for the site’s operation not being disrupted as extensively as before.

We’re incredibly proud to have made as a finalist amongst some of the best health and safety leaders and initiatives in the country.
