Stay safe

Ensuring your safety over summer in Tauranga is the city’s key priority.

Your summer holidays are one of the most exciting times of the year. Not only for you, but also for your family and friends. Make sure you stay safe.

Plan ahead before you go out

The early stage of the evening isn’t just about having a few drinks at home. It’s time to get prepared! Here are some tips for watching out for your mates and making sure your night goes off without too many hitches.

  • Make sure your phone is fully charged before you head out.
  • Eat before you start drinking. It’ll give you that little bit more stamina to make it gracefully through those last songs.
  • Know how you're getting home. Taxi, walking bus, sober driver, the possibilities are endless – just don’t leave it up to chance.
  • Always take some cash or an eftpos card just in case. You never know when you might need a taxi fare... or a feed!

Being out and about

  • Remember the following while you’re out and about and it’ll be a good night.
  • Stick with your mates, don't wander off if you get bored waiting in lines or walking to a new place.
  • Have a glass of water between each drink to help make sure you (and your buzz) can go the distance. It also helps ward off hangovers.
  • It’s easy to lose people, so always let your friends know where you're going.
  • It’s also easy to lose your belongings – look after your stuff.
  • Make sure your sober driver doesn’t get tempted – keep them stocked up with lemonade.

Getting around town and home

  • A graceful exit is as important as a grand entrance – remember to plan how you’re getting home and also around town.
  • Make sure you stick with the plan you make, and that you’re going home with the same number of people you started with.
  • Program the taxi number into your phone, or make sure you have downloaded your Uber app just in case it becomes too challenging with beer goggles on.
  • Have a place to meet up with your mates if you have been separated by a few twists of fate. A good group won’t head home until all its members are accounted for.

Here are some options to get you home:

  • Sober driver
  • Taxi/Dial a driver
  • Uber
  • Bus – find all routes across Tauranga and the wider WBOP on Baybus
  • Baybus website
  • Walking – if you intend to walk to and from town, always make sure you do it in a group.  Did I hear you say walking bus? Don't forget a designated ‘driver’, you don't want to end up in a bush.

Keep yourself safe – a few tips from the Bay of Plenty Police

  • If you’re heading out, remember the alcohol limits. Take a taxi or the bus, or have a sober driver pick you up and drop you off – don’t drink and drive.
  • Avoid walking alone in isolated places at night – stay in well-lit areas where there are other people.
  • Don’t leave your drink unattended.
  • Make sure you lock your car and accommodation.
  • Don’t leave valuables in your car.
  • Make sure you know where you can and can’t take alcohol – there are alcohol bans in most public places over the summer season.

Please look after yourself, your mates and your family and make it a summer to remember and not one to regret or forget.
