Candidate profile

My principal place of residence is not in the Matua-Otūmoetai  General Ward area. I am also standing for Mayor.

I love Tauranga and have been part of this community for over three decades. I've lived, run businesses and raised a family here. Currently I work at simplifying business processes for small businesses here and overseas. I want to give back and serve my community. With a strong financial and people management background, including a BMS, I bring robust financial literacy, comprehension, and decision-making skills to the table.

I participate actively in our vibrant Arts communities, meeting a variety of people and working with different personalities to meet common goals.

When elected, my priorities are to be part of a cohesive council with comprehensive community representation, and to implement future strategic plans with measurable objectives. I will focus on infrastructure and community facilities to build a city which caters for individual, cultural and business needs. I will advocate for a healthier city where our diverse cultural priorities are respected.

My principal place of residence is in the Matua-Otūmoetai General Ward area.

Democracy was won by people who died to protect it, some in society have self interests and try to bypass the system by making lots of noise like children in the hope that some benefits will be produced.

The fact is that the ratepayers of any city can demand a vote on an important issue and councillors should make sure this transpires and not decided amongst themselves alone.

As a mediator people often say I have a problem but don't mention my name but sometimes we have to speak up for democracy.

The cost of any referendum is a small price to pay when you consider the millions being spent on some projects.

A recent local problem was solved by a man who said all one needed was common sense.

What more can one say? We make life by what we give.

Candidate profile

My principal place of residence is in the Matua-Otūmoetai General Ward area.

Born and raised in Otūmoetai, I returned in 2006 keen to support the community that shaped me. As Executive Director of Sustainable BOP Trust and a Regional Transport Advisor, I've developed a detailed understanding of council's plans and finances.

Tauranga's biggest challenge is managing the rapid growth that's benefitting developers but overwhelming the city. Council debt is skyrocketing.

It's vital we prioritise essential infrastructure, including top-ranked transport projects (Hewletts-Totara upgrade, public transport, etc.), a Tauranga West transfer station, and keeping Otūmoetai Pool.

However, we must limit rates increases by curbing non-essential spending and ensuring the government and land developers contribute more towards growth infrastructure.

As your Matua-Otūmoetai councillor, I'll value different perspectives and ensure your voice is heard. I excel at teamwork, analysis, and finding practical, cost-effective solutions.

Please give me your #1 vote for financial accountability, transparent leadership, and a genuine community voice. I'll hit the ground running.

Candidate profile

My principal place of residence is in the Matua-Otūmoetai  General Ward area.

I have been a resident in Otūmoetai for many years. I have been monitoring council performance, since the Bella Vista scandal.

Recently, I've been at the forefront of Project STOP (Save The Otūmoetai  Pool), working with the communities of Matua, Otūmoetai  and surrounding wards. My love for this community goes way back to the mid-1980s. I'm all about making sure our voices are heard and respected. I'm skilled in fact-finding always putting the community first. I've led a nationwide volunteer group after the $7b financial collapse, including Blue Chip. In 1988, I was employed to open Age Concern in Tauranga and assisted nationwide committees. I am proud to have helped one hundred victims of H&R Block's white-collar crime receive compensation. I assisted Police in the criminal conviction. I'm dedicated and have a vision for progress and sustainable growth for our city. Community views will be a priority.

This election, Tauranga has been presented with the biggest opportunity in over 20 years. The opportunity is to continue the much-needed progress that has been made these past four years in roading, infrastructure, and civic amenity. Let's keep the progress going by electing smart, experienced, dedicated councillors who will work together as a united team and put our city and residents first. I have the experience. I have a background in working in complex environments with large assets to manage, and in delivering results that make a positive difference to people's lives. Candidate profile

My principal place of residence is in the Matua-Otūmoetai General Ward area.

l am married to a marine scientist and have two children: a horticulture researcher and a proud 'tradie'. I am an experienced administrator working with councils, government agencies and research organisations spanning development and innovation, climate change and emergency response (including the Rena environmental program). With degrees in teaching, archaeology and information studies, I am passionate about our country's cultural and environmental heritage.

We can collaborate to make strategic yet simple cost-neutral changes to improve the lives of our ratepayers. Earnings in Tauranga are notoriously low and high rates are not helpful in attracting people to new developments or in retaining workers.

From my broad experience, harnessing existing assets like the rail system, and smart direction of infrastructure spending will enhance Tauranga's services. Tauranga is ideally placed to capitalise on the emerging blue economy, to match our vibrant green economy - let's use our natural assets to leverage development.

Candidate profile

My principal place of residence is in the Matua-Otūmoetai General Ward area.

I grew up in Tauranga before serving in New Zealand's military, then travelling the world for eleven years. I returned to the city I love where I currently teach Metalwork at Otūmoetai College, as well as running a successful commercial development business.

I am standing for councillor out of a desire for change, and my hope our council can make a clean break from its troubled past, where common sense and basic courtesy were rare. I have previously served in governance roles on community boards, and believe in investment in new projects, but not at the expense of the upkeep of facilities that have already been established, often by the hard work and private fundraising of volunteers.

I will be a voice for the preservation of the Otūmoetai Pool, Tauranga Golf Course, Tauranga Racecourse, and the Baypark Speedway, and will seek to reverse all previous plans for their disestablishment.

Yes, I am young! Which may be a problem for you, and I can understand why. How can someone at the age of 20 have any idea what our community needs, let alone be put in a position to represent and implement critical policies that benefit the entirety of the Matua-Otūmoetai population? Well, let me tell you. I care! Plain and simple. I care about you regardless of who you are or your position within our community. But what I care about the most, is what you have to say. Being young comes with the problem that I lack life experience; however, being 20-30 years older does not mean I know everything. The only difference is that I want to listen to what you have to say. Please reach out to me with your ideas and questions at letsvotezach@gmail.com and vote for a voice that wants to listen.

The first thing I will say is that the last Labour Government has done more for Tauranga in the past six years than any other Government in the City's history. I grew up in Matua, my mother was a Librarian and my father an Engineer at the Port of Tauranga.

As I walk this city now, I have for the first time a real sense of hope for fulfilment of its potential. I congratulate the Commissioners on being effective in progressing the City's social and transport infrastructure. However, I am not in favour of closing the Otūmoetai Swimming Pool nor with the fee increases for community groups, I seek support for a city-wide water blasting campaign, Tauranga is coated with car and truck exhaust, folks' driveways and paths are generally filthy, it seems to me that folks don't notice but once seen you can't unsee it.

Let's clean it up.

Candidate profile

My principal place of residence is in the Matua-Otūmoetai i General Ward area.

Living in Matua with my wife, two sons and daughter, I'm committed to Matua-Otūmoetai  and Tauranga's future. As a player-coach at Otūmoetai Hockey Club, I value teamwork and community engagement.

With LLB(Hons)/BSc degrees, my career began as a commercial lawyer at Russell McVeagh. A decade in business and technology roles followed, within small-medium businesses including (currently) successful Tauranga startup LawVu. My strengths include analysing complex information, approaching problems from multiple perspectives and building consensus through evidence and advocacy.

My governance style is collaborative. I encourage Council to unify, based on listening to the community and evidence. Collectively, the Council should invest sensibly in Tauranga's future.

It's heartening that like-minded candidates are coming forward in 2024 with Tauranga's democracy returning. I've met inspiring candidates from other wards and believe Tauranga will elect fresh, inquisitive, hard-working councillors ready to listen and collaborate.

Together, let's ensure Tauranga remains first in quality of life!
