Coastal erosion is the loss of land due to coastal processes such as waves and tidal currents wearing away that land, suddenly or overtime.
We monitor the entire coastal area for long-term erosion trends, to project how far and fast erosion could happen. We have 50-and 100-year erosion lines which we developed in the late 1990s. We review and update these lines every 10 years, based on new information and sea level rise estimates.
More recently we have developed a new project to assess erosion in the margins around Tauranga Harbour. This work will allow to determine how the harbour margins will respond to changing sea levels in the next 110 years.
