A by-election was required to fill an extraordinary vacancy for Te Awanui Māori Ward
The vacancy arose from the recent resignation of Mikaere Sydney, due to ill-health. Voting opened on Monday, 7 April. For more key dates, please refer to the project timeline.
Whether you’ve voted in this by-election or not, you may have received a letter from the Electoral Commission asking if your details are up to date. This is part of their nationwide drive ahead of local body elections around the country later this year.
As Tauranga had local body elections last year, and is currently holding a by-election for the Māori ward seat, the voting period referenced in the Electoral Commission letter does not apply to Tauranga and local body elections will take place again here in 2028.
